European initiative for digitization and sustainability

What is a data space?

A data space is an environment in which public and private entities share information in a secure, interoperable, and governed manner, respecting digital sovereignty and European regulations.

These digital ecosystems facilitate innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability, while ensuring traceability and trust in the use of data.

Kiwa guarantees the Data Space by validating that it complies with security, quality, and legal compliance standards.

Specifically, they are developed in accordance with the UNE 0087:2025 specification, which defines and characterizes data spaces in Spain. In addition, at Kiwa we actively participate as vocal members and observers in the UNE, which allows us to ensure that our spaces are aligned with the best practices and criteria recognized in the sector.

Five data spaces, one goal:
transforming Europe

Each data space responds to a key challenge in the digital and sustainable transition.

Each one has its own website where you can find detailed information on use cases, help with the Data Space Kit, and opportunities for participation.

Benefits of data spaces

European data spaces are not just a technological infrastructure: they are a driver of transformation that connects information, people, and organizations to generate shared value.

Together, data spaces enable progress towards a smarter, greener, and more inclusive economic and social model, aligned with the objectives of the European Union and the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

1

They promote the digitization of strategic sectors.

They enable the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and smart sensors into key areas of the economy and public management.
2

They improve efficiency in the management of natural and urban resources.

Thanks to data sharing, processes in energy, water, mobility, and urban planning are optimized, reducing costs and environmental impact.
3

They enable data-driven and evidence-based decision-making.

They provide traceable and reliable information that supports public policy, strategic investments, and service planning.
4

They strengthen competitiveness and sustainability in companies and public administrations.

They provide new business opportunities, drive innovation, and strengthen the transition to greener and more responsible models.

Certification is not an administrative formality, but a strategic element.
Kiwa guarantees data spaces by validating that they comply with security, quality, and legal compliance standards.

The importance of certification in data spaces

Certification is a fundamental pillar in the functioning of data spaces. Its role is to ensure that all technical components, such as connectors that enable access and information exchange, comply with established standards. This ensures the integrity, security, and reliability of the ecosystem, while also facilitating compliance with current regulations.

Co-funding organizations and calls for proposals

European Data Spaces (EEDD) are co-financed by national and regional bodies under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – NextGenerationEU:

  • Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration
Funds grants in the field of digitization for the transformation of strategic productive sectors through the creation of demonstrators and use cases for Data Sharing Spaces.
  • Generalitat Valenciana
Promotes grants for experimental development projects in artificial intelligence and for the promotion of sectoral data spaces.

👉 Both calls for proposals are part of the European Sectoral Data Spaces Program, which aims to promote the creation of demonstrators and use cases throughout Spain.

A European project financed with Next Generation EU funds

The Data Space Kit has a total investment of €60 million, promoted by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Red.es within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, with funding from the European Next Generation EU funds.

The Data Spaces Kit finances membership of data spaces with €50,000 for public entities and €30,000 for private entities.

Its objective is to facilitate the incorporation of public and private entities into sectoral data spaces, promoting interoperability, governance, and the value of data.

👉 If you want to know the requirements, grants, and calls for proposals, consult each data space in its specific section.
